Niko the galgo If you have never come across the term Galgo before Google it. Go to images. Chances are you will initially think ‘greyhound’ then upon looking at those images closer you will see awful acts of neglect and cruelty.

The Galgo (or Spanish Greyhound) is used as a hunting dog in rural Spanish communities. When the hunting season is over many are abandoned, left to starve or worse still hung from trees and left to die.

The communities that use these dogs do not view them as pets, do not love them or care for them. The dog is a tool and when it’s usefulness is over it is discarded. You can read more about the plight of the galgo here, as finally it has been noticed by the British national press.

I have had the privilege of working with Greyhounds In Need,  a UK charity that works with Spanish shelters that rescue these galgos for rehoming in mainland Europe and Britain. Together we developed a classroom teaching resource for use in Spanish schools. The hope is that by supporting the teaching of English in Spanish schools using ‘galgos’ as the subject matter, we will educate children about the plight of the galgo and change the perception Spanish people have of these dogs. Hopefully this will encourage more people to adopt a galgo as a family pet, and thereby reduce the need to find homes outside of Spain. You can find out more about the education resource here.

You can support Greyhounds In Need here www.greyhoundsinneed.co.uk; with a donation, by sponsoring a galgo, or even find out about rehoming a galgo yourself.

Do you own a galgo? I’d love to hear from you if you do, they make lovely family pets despite their histories of neglect and abuse.
